The Barns at Moulton Farm

Moulton Farm is a treasure for the plein air painter.  A working farm in Meredith, NH, it has been my go to spot for the last several Mondays.  I am working my way around the back side of the barns with no end of material in sight. The property will make for a wonderful series of work done in all seasons.  The paintings pictured above are oils done on 5 1/2 x 14 canvas panels.

Jackson Falls

Had a wonderful day painting with good friends at Jackson Falls in Jackson, NH. This oil is 12 x 12 and was completed on site.  Hoping the weather cooperates and that I can get several more Mondays of Plein Air painting in!

This is a recent commission of Jackson Falls, Jackson, NH with a view of the bridge. The commision came from The Cassidy Gallery at Jackson Village. This is such a picturesque setting.  Heading back to Jackson Falls on Monday to do some Plein Air painting with a couple of artist friends.

Here is a watercolor study of the same set of Islands viewed on a foggy morning from Black Cat Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, Moultonboro, NH. The still gray water and gray misty sky provided the perfect back drop for the simple yet dramatic shapes of the island masses. This watercolor is part of a series called From the Sketchbook, featuring the quick, simplified paintings from my plein air adventures.

Always before doing a larger more refined painting in the studio, I do several small sketches in pencil, ink, watercolor or a combination of the three.  These little gems help me capture the ever changing light far better than a photograph.  This watercolor sketch was done in the early morning on Squam Lake in Holderness, NH.  The still water and shimmering light is typical of the early morning hours on the lakes in central New Hampshire.

After a busy summer, I am finally able to get back out and do some plein air painting.  I am fortunate to have a friend who lives on Black Cat Island on Lake Winnipesaukee in Moultonboro, NH.  I spent the night and was up at the crack of dawn.  The morning was foggy and misty but the sun was trying to peek through. This land formation is rarely visible with this clarity as it blends in to the land masses behind it. On this morning the back land was obscured by the mist and fog and created a glorious back drop for these wonderful little islands. I was able to do a number of small paintings of the different views of Lake Winnipesaukee as the sun rose.
